Because we know that our customers enjoy nature through their daily pursuits, we know that they share our sense of responsibility for the preservation of our surroundings.
We take pride in every decision we take, no matter how small, that helps to care for our environment. So what are we doing?
First we have to be realistic in our approach and accept that all of our activities will impact our environment in some way. We have to identify the areas where we can make a difference and still be able to sustain our core activities.
Recycling:
Our US distribution centre is completely 'waste free' with a 100% recycling target policy. We also try to manage our recycling locally to reduce the carbon footprint of material transport. In fact our surplus card packaging which accounts for our greatest potential waste is either re-used or recycled to make bedding for horse stalls and distributed to local barns. This type of bedding also breaks down faster than traditional alternatives for composting and subsequent fertilisation use and is fully biodegradable.
Efficiency:
Energy efficiency decisions also form an important part of our strategy for adapting the way we do business to help our environment.
Our building was designed for mass cold storage, so is elevated from the ground to reduce heat exchange and both ceilings and walls contain 12 inches of insulating material to reduce both heating and cooling energy consumption.
We also make simple decisions like lowering the working temperature of our office by a couple of degrees in the winter and raising it in the summer.
Our storage facility is also sectioned so that areas that are not permanently populated by staff are allowed to fluctuate with ambient temperatures, becoming naturally warmer in the summer and naturally cooler in the winter.
Vehicle Use:
Vehicles are also selected with fuel efficiency in mind and journey's are planned and compounded to reduce unnecessary vehicle use.
Paper use and printing:
We are constantly re-examining our use of paper and printers within our office to try to maximise the use of secure electornic storage, reducing the need for making and keeping paper records. This reduces environmental impact through lessening the use of paper which reduces the footprint from bulky paper transport and on ink and toner cartridges.
Drinking Water :
We are lucky enough to have a great water supply and have all made the decision that our tap-water here tastes just fine, so there are no water coolers to be seen in our office. This reduces impact from water delivery and plastic packaging.
Telling our friends
These small decisions we make can be magnified if we let other people know how easy it can be. We try to gently remind our friends, families and partner companies how they too can change habits to help the environment without affecting quality of lifestyle or ability to do business. In fact, these options can even put a few extra cents in your pocket!
We endeavour to continue to take our responsibility to the environment seriously and to ensure that environmental issues are always a consideration in our decision making process. |
