We created limited editions of our Galway country and Ultima sailing boots featuring the famous Pink Ribbon, the universally recognised symbol of International Breast Cancer Research. For a pledge of €300, donors received a pair of their chosen style of special edition boot with all of the money pledged going towards the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NCBRI).

Slightly scuffed and a little worn, but after 75 years Chrissy Shannelly’s Dubarry shoes, pictured above, still look elegant and surprisingly contemporary in style. Their long life and looks is testament to the quality and care put into their manufacture – an ethic Dubarry of Ireland has passionately maintained since these shoes were made in 1937 at their factory in Ballinasloe, County Galway.

The factory was built after the local Chamber of Commerce investigated ways to bring employment to the town. Local investment allowed the building of a new factory in the Old Workhouse with the purpose of manufacturing high quality shoes. A co-operative was formed and a new company was created.

Matty McNally and his son Matthew

The founders of the co-operative wanted to be different from other Irish brands and also felt the company needed a continental European flavour for their enterprise, so after some research decided upon the name Dubarry, after Madame du Barry, a famous French beauty and courtesan to Louis XV.

With the factory ready and a name in place production started on the 3rd March, 1937. Chrissy Shannelly, who turned 90 last Christmas and who was born and bred in Ballinasloe, bought her shoes shortly after starting work at the new factory as a machinist. They cost her 15 shillings at the time. Employees could, if they wished, spread the payment with deductions from their wages. Wages back then were around 2 shillings, 6 pence a week for men, so it is clear to see what a luxury item Chrissy’s shoes were.

The very first wages book from 1937 featuring Matty McNally

Another prized item from 1937 that Dubarry hold is the very first Wages Book. One of the employees listed is Matty McNally, 90, who still lives in Ballinasloe and worked for Dubarry for over 50 years.

Matty’s son Matthew still works for Dubarry today in the Customer Service Department as does Sean Og Hurley , Dubarry’s Personnel Director – whose aunt is Chrissy. This is a legacy of Dubarry’s strong links with the town and the fact that working for the company was very family-orientated, with brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, mothers and fathers, all employed at the factory down through the years.

Today, Dubarry is a multi-national company, selling in over 25 countries designing and developing not only shoes, but their world-famous Boots, including the classic Galway, as well as a collection of Clothing, Bags and Accessories. See full collection at dubarry.com.

But despite their success, Dubarry have never lost sight of their roots or the importance of the people who work for them. Still based in Ballinasloe, the company is proud of its heritage and the inspiration it finds in its homeland.

By continuing to make shoes as good as that first pair in 1937, the next 75 years should be even more successful for Dubarry and the people who work for them.

Leading footwear manufacturer, Dubarry, have announced an innovative promotion to celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary, which by using their International network, will raise €75,000 for the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI).

Dubarry have created limited editions of their classic Galway country boot and the Ultima sailing boot featuring the famous Pink Ribbon, the universally recognised symbol of International Breast Cancer Research. Speaking at the announcement of the promotion at the NBCRI Valentine’s Ball in Galway recently, Dubarry Marketing Director, Michael Walsh said: “We gave a lot of consideration as to how we might mark our 75th anniversary and decided that using our international success to make a significant contribution to such a worthy cause was the most fitting of celebrations. We have a very loyal customer following throughout the world for our appropriately named Galway boot, a majority of whom are female, and they can proudly wear these boots in the knowledge that they have helped support a cause that is close to many hearts”. The promotion will be launched at the Cheltenham Race Festival on Thursday March 15th which is Cancer Research Day and the limited edition boots will also feature at The Chelsea Flower Show, Badminton Horse Trials and the Kentucky Horse Trials in the coming months raising awareness of the Galway based charity internationally.

A donation of €300 will secure a pair of these limited edition boots with every cent raised going to the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI). Every donation will be acknowledged with a scrolled certificate. There are only 250 pairs available so if you would like to be one of the first to step out in a pair, you can do so now by sending your style choice, along with size and fit, to: breastcancerresearch@dubarry.com or visit dubarry.com.

The National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI)

Founded in 1991, the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI) is a voluntary charity, based at the Clinical Science Institute NUI Galway. A leader in the field of breast cancer research, the Institute combines ethical research into the biology of breast cancer, whilst all the time raising awareness of this disease. I had them bring out every single item Dubarry makes, in every colour, touched every piece, had them bring the mannequin outside, inside, a bit to the left…can you turn it around please, hmmm… can you try under this light?

At any equestrian competition, it is practically impossible to miss the knee-high brown leather boots proudly sported by almost every competitor. More often than not, these distinctive boots are made by Dubarry, a company founded in County Galway, Ireland in 1937. The company is named after Madame Dubarry, Louis XV’s famous lover. The company first became known for making indestructible yachting boots. After much found success, Dubarry quickly decided to apply their technology to a pair of country boots that have become a must-have among equestrian riders.
